We stood there waiting patiently for the multi-talented artist to make her appearance. There were screams everytime we saw a pair of legs dressed in white underneath the curtain running across the stage. Well, we all assumed it was Christina Aguilera. At 830pm or so, the lights dimmed and the musical extravaganza began. Christina kicked off the concert "Ain't No Other Man" which sent the crowd screaming at the top of their lungs. Her powerful vocals filled the entire indoor stadium. She was simply stunning.
Honestly, I have never paid to go for a real live concert in my life and Christina Aguilera's Back To Basics Tour was definitely my first and many more to come. It was a night of surprise and astonishment as we were blown away by the artist's many talents and vocal capabilities, along with the great band, dancers, stageworks and decorations. In line with her latest album, Back To Basics, this world tour features jazzy and brassy music, circus theme and new mixes. I was particularly impressed with the remix of old tracks like "Come On Over (All I want is You)" and "What A Girl Wants", giving them a reggae sort of feel, adding a whole fresh mood to these two popular tracks made known by the artist herself.
I also particularly like her stage presence as she struts her stuff, swings her hair, flirt with the dancers, communicate with the audience. Her every action sets a statement for herself. Looking back at the video footages of her bubblegum pop era to dirrty sex siren and now a classy, elegant lady, Christina has come a long way. She gave us songs like "Beautiful, "Fighter" which made me understood why people turn to her songs for inspiration and healing purposes. And hearing her sing it live made it so much more endearing.
By the way, we actually sat outside the stadium for a hour to queue up for the standing seats and we managed to secure a very comfortable front view of the stage at the front of the standing seats. As the night went on, we beared with the pushing and shoving, screaming, and standing and I manage to capture some good images. I would have paid more to be in the front seats, capturing better pictures and videos, if I had known that the concert would be that fantastic. That was the night I put my camera to the ultimate test with its freakish 12x zoom. Judging from where we were standing, the pictures and videos turned out very well. I am so proud of my camera. Ha. Something beyond the concert and Christina, I have never seen that many caucasians congregate at any place in my life than the day itself. Most of them were Australians, I guess. I was literally surrounded by them at the standing zone. Pretty interesting for a change. According to Melvin, there were almost 8000 people at the indoor stadium but it felt less than that. It was not squeezy as I was expecting and we had space to move around and wave our hands, which was good enough judging from more squashed conditions I've been in before.
There were also lots of "queens" present there as aptly put by Joel. There was this bunch of guys, whom we assume are from her fan clubs, wearing t-shirts that say "makes my panties drop", "makes my cherry pop" (they are lyrics from "
Candyman") screaming like girls when the gates were opened for us to enter the stadium. What a high level of enthusiasm I see in them, uh. I didn't know Christina was such an icon for them. I thought Madonna was their icon. Ok, whatever, bet they went crazy when Christina started singing Lady Marmalade and her male dancers came out in drag. It was funny at the same time entertaining. But Christina certainly showed why she deserves to sing it solo than with those three other bitches (Lil'Kim, Pink, Mya). Simply because as Eugene put it, she out-screamed them. haha.
We had so much fun that night until when it was time to get home. There were like cluster of people waiting for cabs everywhere on every road. We waited for 1 and a half freaking hour, from no mid-night charge to exorbitant mid-night charges, but those sucker cabs just refuse to stop. We walked from the indoor stadium to the outdoor stadium, then to somewhere near Kallang station and finally at some god-foresaken bustop along Geylang, still trying to flag for a cab. We were so sweaty, pissed, vulgar, we decided to jump onto any bus that will take us to the heartlands where we stand 500% more chances of getting a cab. In the end 62 took us to somewhere in Hougang and Eugene and I walked home while Melvin and Joel shared a cab home. I was not particularly affected by the cab incident as I was still overwhelmed by Christina's concert but I think it did spoil the mood of the night for some of us.
But anyways, I must give the thumbs up for such an awesome concert. Christina certainly has what it takes to be a diva.
