Growing Up

Tonight is a very special night as it left me with mixed feelings of nostalgia and sentimentality. The reason I say so is because I chanced upon some old friends of mine which I have been wanting to meet for a long time. A short 2 hour conversation with them has left me with a lot of thoughts about my friendship with these people and how our lives have changed over a short course of 2 years. And I must say there have been quite a lot of changes that took place during this period.

I remember the days when we were still be fooling around in school, making a total nuisance of ourselves. Those were the days when we would be running around in our uniform, lugging our oversized bag, wearing our geekish hairstyles and glasses. It may sound very funny when you come to think about it but those were definitely the best days of my childhood. The whole class comes alive at the sound of the bell indicating the end of a day in school. I always look forward to spending time with my friends, at the soccer field, bandroom, playground, everywhere and anywhere where our laughter fills the place. And I am very glad that these people whom I have spent my childhood with are still in contact with me.

One of them is Yong Xiang which I have not seen since secondary, the reason being different junior colleges and schedules hence the inability to meet up. Well, I guess a lot of it is also due to a lack of effort to meet up with one another. He hasn't change much, pretty much the same old nice chap I've known since young. We talked about quite a lot of stuff, especially army as it is the immediate thing that we can relate to at the moment. It was nice to know what he has been up to since we last met and I am so glad that he did well in his studies and is surviving well in the army.

Ashley, the self-proclaimed bachelor-for-life, has just begun a new chapter in his life as he has officially ended his singlehood by plunging into the arms of love. It is so ironic that this is happening. Nonetheless, I think both him and his girl make a very sweet-looking couple. And this brilliant guy is making hell of a money now. business-minded, donald-trump gonna-be. ha who knows?By the way, I am sure "guan yin ma" will not blame him for breaking his promise.

Khong Chin, daring, adventurous, is just living his life the way he wants to. I admire him for his effort and time to try everything that interests him because I think he has a lot of experiences which I have yet to go through.

Lastly, Si Jun, whom I meet up with now and then, seems to be forever busy with school work, his friends from JC-Band-Poly-you name it, or band practices. But I can tell he is happier as he is doing what he is passionate and interested in, without ever giving up after an obstacle.

It seems funny to examine my friends in such micro details because I would not have been able to say all these back in those days when we merely horse around in school. It is today that I truly understood friendship in greater detail. The people whom I knew then still exist and are seated right before me. The only thing differnt is that we are more mature in our thinking now as compared to then. Our principles, our ideal of life, our way of working changes when we grow up, our thinking matures with every day passing by. I am learning more about each and every single one of my friends everytime I see any of them.

As much as I miss the days when fun was all we cared about, I like hanging around and talking to people who grew up with me and shared similar experiences with me now and then in our lives. This interesting process called "growing up" makes the mind more mature and allows one to discover and learn about things that have been around them throughout their life. It is not as if we cannot have fun as we used to, in fact I believe with the common experiences we had in our lives, more fun can be generated when the chance arises. It makes me want to meet up with my friends more often and just hang around and chill, have fun, the way we use to back in those days.

All the best to these guys in their lives and may we meet up again real soon... got lotsa things to catch up on...
